This year, the festivities took us to the heart of Cuddington, with performances at the beautiful St Nicholas Church. A walk, organised with characteristic flair by Claire-Lise, turned the event into a day-long celebration.

The morning began under a cool, grey sky as singers, families, and dogs set out from Haddenham for a scenic walk through fields and over stiles, winding our way into the Cuddington parish. Spirits were high despite the chill, and the mood was set for a day of harmony—in every sense of the word.

On arrival, we made our way up the narrow, winding stairwell of St Nicholas to the tower roof. From this lofty perch, overlooking the village, the choir took its place. With music in hand and the countryside stretching out around us, we launched into our opening set of madrigals. The sound floated down to an appreciative crowd gathered below, their applause rising up to meet us.

Back inside the church, we reassembled at the front for a second performance. The venue was joyfully full—local families, children, babies, and dogs all forming part of the warm and welcoming audience. Traditional Rounds brought an interactive element, with enthusiastic audience participation, and we closed with the ever-popular “Now Is the Month of Maying”, a perfect nod to the season. Thanks to generous donations, £170 was also raised for Christian Aid.

After the music, the socialising began in earnest. Tea, coffee, and a spread of nibbles offered the perfect setting for catching up with friends, old and new.

The afternoon saw our walking party head to the Bell Pub in Chearsley, where VE Day celebrations were in full swing. The pub was packed to the rafters, but we all managed to squeeze around a communal table, elbows tucked in. Despite the squash, the staff were outstanding: cheerful, efficient, and wonderfully accommodating.

Some of our more intrepid walkers completed the full circular route back to Haddenham, while others departed for home. It was a day that perfectly captured what the May Day Madrigals are all about: beautiful music, shared experiences, and the joy of community.

Each spring, the Witchert Chorale celebrates the changing season with our much-loved May Day Madrigals—a cherished tradition that blends music and community spirit.
